Monk for a Month takes care of everything for you, including :
- All meals - food and beverages
- Arranging your acccommodation which is provided by the temple
- 24 hour back-up support
- Appropriate donation to the temple
- Learning materials and tutorials in English
- Provisions for ordination ceremony
- Robes are provided for you during your stay
- We provide a contact service for your family and friends should they need to urgently contact you
- Optional transfers to and from Chiang Mai
- Optional day-tours of the area
Our programs include everything you need to live, study, practice and ordain as a novice monk.
During an ordained stay you will live as a Buddhist novice monk :
- Wake up before dawn to participate in morning alms rounds
- Receive the Dhamma including the Four Noble truths and the Eightfold path
- Practice Vipassana meditation
- Study the Pali language for Buddhist chanting and prayer
- Follow the Ten Precepts for a novice monk
- Refrain from killing living things
- Refrain from stealing
- Refrain from sexual misconduct
- Refrain from lying and gossiping
- Refrain from taking intoxicants (drugs, alchohol)
- Refrain from taking food at inappropriate times (after noon)
- Refrain from singing, dancing, playing music or attending performances
- Refrain from wearing perfume, cosmetics and decorative accessories
- Refrain from sitting on high chairs and sleeping on luxurious, soft beds
- Refrain from accepting money
- Undergo formal, ceremonial ordination at the discretion of your Abbott
There are also a number of extra activities that are available to you including:
- teaching english to student monks
- meditation retreats in nearby forest temples
- guided day tours of the area
